Navigating through Data Analysis and Probability in Prekindergarten--Grade 3 - 5
"An understanding of data analysis and probability is essential to the mathematics education of informed citizens. Evaluating claims that are based on data and arriving at conclusions in the face of uncertainty have become basic skills in the information age.
This book discusses the development of data and probability concepts in grades 3-5. It shows teachers how to engage students in exploring and extending these concepts through activities that build on students' earlier experiences with data. The activities focus on formulating questions and collecting data through a variety of methods, including observations, surveys, and experiments. Students display their data in bar graphs and line plots, and they describe the distribution of data sets by looking at measures of center as well as gaps and outliers. Investigations of the usefulness of data in predicting and drawing conclusions lead to a consideration of probability, in which students begin to explore the mathematical likelihood of events."
