A Farewell to Arms
A Farewell to Arms was written in a simple, yet stark language and included profanity, just as a soldier would utter on a battleground. His publisher had it repalced with dashes but Hemingway painstakingly wrote out the rude words and presented a copy to James Joyce! Published in 1929, it is believed to be a largely autobiographical account of war. Using short, punchy sentences, Hemingway recreates the rhythm of war. The protagonist Henry's pain of loving and losing is dealt with a matter-of-fact poignancy as he describes situations in the war as well as the personal loss he faces.
